Danni Zhang is a joint PhD researcher at Northeastern University London and the University of Kent, affiliated with the Institute of Cyber Security for Society. Her research interests include global digital governance, digital geopolitics, and the international politics of data, and AI, with particular attention to the European Union, China, and competing visions of digital order. She is a 2026-2027 Northeastern University Humanities Center Global Fellow for a project on digital governance and changing architecture of sovereignty. Her work has appeared in Politics and Governance and Journal of Current Chinese Affairs.

    The EU’s Digital Omnibus on AI postpones key high-risk obligations while strengthening the European AI Office and adding new safeguards. The reform responds to incomplete standards and growing competitiveness pressures, but delay is defensible only if it produces workable guidance, adequately resource enforcement and lower unnecessary burdens without weakening fundamental-rights protection. Its implementation will determine whether simplification becomes regulatory pragmatism or strategic retreat.
