Dr. Hideaki Shinoda is Professor, Graduate School of Global Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and Director of Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center (HPC), which implemented the “Program for the Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding” between JFY2007 and JFY2023 commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. During his student years, he volunteered in refugee relief missions for Kurdish refugees in Iran, Somali refugees in Djibouti, and Cambodian refugees in Thailand, and served with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1991 as an International Polling Station Officer.
He earned an M.A. in Political Science from Waseda University and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (1998). He has held academic and research appointments at LSE, Keele University, Hiroshima University, and visiting positions at the University of Cambridge, Columbia University, and the International Criminal Court.
His research focuses on international peacebuilding, conflict resolution, sovereignty and international security. He is the author of many books including, Confronting Theories of Geopolitics: Continental and Anglo-American Traditions (Springer, 2026), Partnership Peace Operations: UN and Regional Organizations in Multiple Layers of International Security (Routledge, 2024), and Re-examining Sovereignty: From Classical Theory to the Global Age (Palgrave, 2000). He has received academic awards including Osaragi Jiro Rondan Award (2003), Suntory Academic Award (2012), Yomiuri Yoshino Sakuzo Award (2017). The list of his work can be found at: CLICK HERE
